Addison’s disease, also referred to as “adrenal insufficiency,” is an unusual disorder that happens when the body doesn’t produce enough of a certain hormone to continue functioning normally. In the case of Addison’s disease, the adrenal glands, located above each kidney, produce too little cortisol and, often, too little aldosterone.
This disorder can happen in both men and women, regardless of age, and can be life-threatening if not handled well.
Addison’s disease symptoms gradually develop over time, often over several months. Watch out for the following:
- Extreme fatigue
- Weight loss and decreased appetite
- Darkening of the skin
- Low blood pressure (sometimes fainting)
- Salt cravings
- Low blood sugar
- Nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Muscle or joint pains
- Depression or other behavioral symptoms
- Body hair loss or sexual dysfunction in women
If you notice these symptoms in you or your loved ones, don’t delay — have your doctors check it out immediately.
